Common Florida Insects

Ghost Ants: Ghost ants are a common household pest in Florida, known for their tiny size and pale almost transparent appearance which makes them difficult to see and detect. These ants are attracted to moisture, often times nesting indoors in wall voids, behind base boards, scavenging around sinks or any source of  water. Due to Florida's warm and humid climate, Ghost Ants can quickly establish large colonies making professional pest control essential and effective in elimination and long-term prevention.

Palmetto Bug (American Roach):  Palmetto bugs, commonly encountered in Florida homes are actually a regional term for the American Cockroach. This roach is one of the largest species of roach found in the U.S. These pest thrive in Florida's warm, humid environments and are often found in sewers, moist mulch beds and damp areas around the home, often times coming inside after a long lasting rain or a long term exceptionally dry period. Despite their name, Palmetto bugs are not exclusive to palmetto trees and can enter structures in search of food, moisture, away from harsh weather, making professional pest management crucial for effective control.

Earwigs and Silverfish:  Earwigs and Silverfish are a common nuisance pest in Florida, often found in dark, damp areas such as bathrooms, kitchens, attics, crawlspaces and garages. Earwigs, recognizable by their pincers are harmless to humans but may invade homes in search of moisture and/or shelter. Silverfish, with their silvery scales and quick darting movements, feed on starchy materials like paper, glue and fabrics. Florida's humid climate creates ideal conditions for both pests, making consistent pest control essential for prevention and long-term protection.

Spiders: In Florida, spiders are commonly found inside lanais and homes due to the states warm, humid climate that supports a wide variety of species. While most spiders -such as orb weavers, cellar spiders and jumping spiders- are harmless and can even HELP reduce insect populations, some like the brown recluse and black widow may pose a threat to humans. Wolf and Huntsman spiders are commonly found inside Florida homes and lanais, especially in garages, sheds and near entry points. While both species may appear large and intimidating, they are not aggressive and rarely bite unless provoked. These spiders do not build webs and are active hunters meaning they are constantly on the move, helping to control other insect populations indoor and outdoors.

What can you do at home to help?

-Keep shrubs, trees and flowering plants off and cut back from touching the home. Any shrubs, trees or flowering plants touching the home can serve as a bridge for easy access over to the home.

-Sealing up any entry points with silicone caulking, sealing up foundation cracks larger than a hair line on the exterior. Many insects are small enough to access areas smaller than a ball point pen.

-Ensure doors and windows are properly closed and sealed with weathering strip, draft stoppers, or sliding door brush strips.

-Dehumidifiers or Damp-Rid bags or buckets are great for capturing excess moisture in the air to help keep humidity levels low.

-Regularly sweeping down your Florida lanai/home helps reduce spider activity by removing webs, egg sacs and insect prey while also disrupting their nesting areas and eliminating debris and moisture that attract pests.
